Winning Entries from Crowcombe and Stogumber

Somerset Art Works artist Lyn Mowat spent an enjoyable afternoon looking through a wonderful selection of At Home with Nature entries that arrived from Crowcombe and Stogumber Federated Primary Schools.

“I am an artist who is passionate about the Natural World and I have thoroughly enjoyed looking carefully at the work created by the children who have engaged with SAW’s “At Home with Nature” project. The positive side of lockdown was that the roads and skies were free of cars and planes and peace settled over the countryside.  We heard the birds rejoicing and delighted in the beautiful wild flowers and butterflies.  We had time to observe and let nature be our teacher.” Lyn Mowat

Take a look at Lyn’s chosen designs, which will be printed on to aluminium by artist Melanie Tomlinson and returned to the schools for colourful display in their grounds.

Abi has coloured her bird beautifully, I like to think that she watches the wild birds in the winter and gets much pleasure from them.

During the lockdown period, all key stage 2 children at Crowcombe and Stogumber have spent time in their gardens doing a mega bio blitz. In the Spring term they studied climate change and this was a perfect opportunity for them to see what difference they could make in their own back garden.

Eleanor has created her own version of a Painted Lady and I like the way her colours respond to the green of the vine leaves.

School pupils have undertaken a range of activities using a SEEK app, looking at bio diversity, classification, food chains, pollination, bird watches etc. With this wealth of knowledge we have set them the challenge to create something which will enhance their area. So far there is a range of beautiful bug hotels, bird feeders, hedgehog hotels and more. Staff have been blown away by their enthusiasm.

I like the subtlety of Joseph’s Hawk Moth as it is attracted to the table lamp.  Moths are so beautiful and this has been well observed.

“The At Home with Nature project has been a perfect opportunity for all children to use their creativity on this theme. This has been supported with other art activities including botanical art, bird drawings and creating Wild Meadow pictures.” Penny Phillips, Teacher

Emily has created her own little theatre set for this beautiful dragonfly.  I like the drama.

Insects are so important and Nancy has made this beetle very special.  Also, it makes me smile!

Well done to everyone at Crowcombe and Stogumber Primary Schools!
